These 11 “Kosmickandi” paintings are 900mm in diameter, are balanced and rotatable. They each have a robust metal hanging mechanism, together with a simple battery motor that drives each painting slowly but surely clockwise once every six days. With or without the motor they may be moved manually to any position. They are each finished with a stainless steel rim.
This slow moving video demonstrates a very slow rotqtion, but the actual rotqtion is imperceptible - like that of our Earth - which spins at 1609 kms/hour and is revolving around the sun at 107,826 kms/hour.
There is no ‘up’ or' ‘down’ to the paintings, and each has a structured design governed by the subdivision of its circle into ELEVEN, each painting with its own individual spacial character and light.
The first in this series KosmickandiK1818’s design, with a hint of ‘mobius,’ grew out of the working marks made round the edge of the disc as the mechanism was tried and tested by my collaborator Don Bullock of Whanganui, New Zealand.
Each work ‘evolved’ in its making - a kind of metamorphosis - a fusion of cosmic and structural ‘Kandi’ creations.
The numbering of each painting developed from the subdivision of 360 degrees by 11. There will not be twelve!
